Art has always been an integral part of my life. I've always enjoyed drawing and creating. I majored in art in college and eventually began a career as an art educator, teaching K-12 for over 30 years before retiring in 2019. I loved teaching art and know that I gained as much or more knowledge from my students than I imparted on them.
In my retirement I have been able to devote more time to creating my own artwork. I have had pieces accepted in many juried exhibitions, and have even been honored with several awards. I am currently a resident artist at Green Door Art Gallery and have participated in multiple art fairs, including the Queeny Art Fair, which is put on by GSLA.
My artwork is an invitation to pause and look deeper—to engage with the distinctions of surface and space, and to feel a sense of curiosity.
When creating mixed media collage pieces, I am drawn to the process of arranging textures, colors, and forms through the layering process to create abstract compositions in which familiar elements evolve into new and, sometimes, ambiguous imagery, inviting viewers to make their own connections with each piece.
When choosing to work more representationally, I create pastel paintings, as the medium provides the perfect melding of drawing and painting. The rich, vibrant colors allow for blending and layering, and the stick form of pastel allows for the same qualities of mark making that I so enjoy about the drawing process.
Whether my process is deliberate or intuitive, it involves layering, assessing, and reworking until a composition achieves both balance and harmony no matter the subject matter.
